Those people that eat fish

Postby vejjo on Thu Mar 06, 2008 12:03 pm

Hello everyone,

I wanted to know what people thought about pescetarians who call themselves "vegetarian". Should we consider them one of us in the hopes that they might make a change for the better or do you think they shouldn't be calling themselves vegetarian at all?

This is an easy one. vegetarians don't eat fish. Anyone who eats fish is not a vegetarian. Even if they call themselves one they still are not vegetarian.

Unless fish have started growing out of the ground all of a sudden , i'd say they're not part of a vegetarian diet :P I wouldn't how ever be mean/snide about it since they are a few steps ahead of most people, even though they may be one step behind.
Don't worry,
Be happy.

I don't mean to be negative, but no. Thats like saying your a christian, but you don't believe in Jesus.

They can still hang out with us. I have no problem with that. I don't think anyone could accuse us of being exclusive (what with the food van on a public street and everything). Some of my best friends eat meat.

Actually, all of my best friends eat meat :-(

I think defining vegetarian is pretty easy - you don't eat the flesh (or other actual body parts) of any animal. It is much harder to try and define vegan - are you a vegan if you still wear leather shoes? Are you a vegan if you keep companion animals? Are you a vegan if you accidentally inhale bugs?

But on vegetarians eating fish, as everyone else has said, it simply doesn't work. Again, as others have said, this doesn't mean we shouldn't embrace people who are already making a huge lifestyle change, and help them take it further.

i don't particularly like branding people as anything because as soon as you do that it 1. creates exclusivity (look at the name of this thread for example) and 2. stereotypes people. i think saying i practice a vegetarian diet or i practice a meat-free'/cruelty-free diet is much better as you're not saying I'm vegetarian as some sort of fashion statement. might sound delusional to be picky over such a tiny thing but i think its important.
